I have been a nurse for ten years and it took me a long time to figure out how to deal with the stress that came with the job. Many don’t understand how taxing this field can be. From outside, it appears that we only work 3 days and take lavish vacations, so how in the world could we be so tired. However, until you spend time in the hospital and see what nurses and other hospital personnel do with your own eyes, you’ll never understand.
I’m so glad the nursing community is talking about the value in taking care of ourselves. I particularly appreciate the emphasis on not feeling guilty for it. It’s so necessary for nurses to take the time to take care of themselves…First! I often say that its impossible to care for others if you don’t care for yourself.
I’ve put together a list of ideas that we as nurses can do to help relieve our stress. They don’t have to cost a lot of money, just things that add a little light to our lives.
- Buy fresh flowers
- Do something you love
- Take a nap
- Go for a walk or a hike
- Unplug from Social media
- Listen to an audiobook
- Call a friend
- Aromatherapy
- Get a Massage
- Eat your favorite meal
- Journal
- Go on a staycation
- Exercise
- Meditate
- Sleep in
- Take a bath
- Dance
- Pray
- Take a bath
- Practice Yoga
- Listen to your favorite music
- Do nothing at all (personal favorite)
Often we think we have to do something elaborate in order to feel some type of relief, but a little bit goes a long way. Its so important for us to take those moments to ourselves so we have something to give to others. The saying is true, You can’t pour from an empty cup!
