A Nurse who understands and optimizes the time spent bedside with their patient

Multitask Maven
Through my experience being a nurse I realized that the time spent bedside with the patient is the most valuable time during your shift. It honestly can make or break your entire day. When you spend quality time at bedside with your patient, you can also transform their entire hospital experience. So often we are rushing out of the room that we miss out on an important opportunities to educate and provide quality care to our patients.
Now I’m not saying that you have to spend hours at a time in each room. My background is in Med-Surg, so I know that with 5 or more patients that this would be impossible. What I am saying is that if you are intentional with the time you spend in the room, it can make your day/night much smoother. For example, while receiving bedside report, you can look around the room and see what you might need for your med pass. Does the patient have water? How long do you have before you need to change your IV fluids? Is your tubing expired? Does the patient have a pill crusher? All of these are tasks that can interrupt your med pass, but easily fixed. By taking an inventory of what you need, you are now able to focus on your patient, their questions, and their care for the 20 minutes you are in the room.
