I have earned a reputation of being that friend that always has everything anyone needs. I once had a friend call and ask me if I had birthday candles in my trunk. The thing is that I would rather be over prepared than not (it’s my Virgo). The same is true when I’m at work. As a travel nurse, I found it easier to have my own supplies than to wander around asking people where things are. So here’s a list of the items I keep with me to make sure I’m ready to get my shift started.
-
Littman Stethoscope: I have a few heavy duty stethoscopes, but this one is my favorite. Its super light and easy to use. And because stethoscopes sometimes grow feet and walk away, its not too expensive to replace.
-
Clipboard w/ Brain and Post-its: I would be lost without my clipboard and brain. Between doctors phone numbers, critical values and numerous other notes, having a place to write and stay organized is necessary.
-
Pulse Oximeter: Who had time to search for a vitals machine when their patient complains of shortness of breath? Not me!
-
Thermometer: During this pandemic, I have found that having my own thermometer to be very convenient. So many times equipment has been broken or in short supply, and not having my patients vitals can cause unnecessary delays in patient care.
-
PockeTalk Translator: Translates over 70 languages into voice and text. Great for traveling.
-
Statpack: Cuter than a fanny pack and more functional the full pockets.
-
Pens, Pencil , Sharpie, Highlighter: I’ve never know a love like this before. I didn’t realize when I became a nurse I would need to buy stock in Staples and Office Max. IYKYK.
-
Scissors : You never know how much you need them, until you don’t have them.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Because Coronavirus…and patient safety!
-
Chapstick: These masks are drying out my lips and that’s not cute.
-
Notebook : If I have downtime, I like to make to-do lists, budget, or write blog outlines.
-
Waterbottle: Hydration is key!
